Reasons why the same smartphones are rebranded into two different names - Dunknownbytes

Reasons why smartphone brands are rebranding the same phone under two different names.

Realme launched its entry-level device last 2018, the Realme C1 but wait? It is the same phone as their parent brand's entry-level too, the Oppo A3S. Poco propelled the Poco M2 recently, and they share the same looks with the Redmi 9 Prime? We all know it is very confusing and weird, isn't it?

Well here are the reasons why smartphone brands are rebranding the same phone under two different names.

1. It is the strategy of a parent company to release it via a different platform or market to cater its specific consumers.

In India, when Xiaomi arrived it is an online exclusive brand competing with other Offline and Online exclusive smartphone brands. There are a lot of smartphones that have launched from Xiaomi over the Indian market every year and now they have approximately 120+ larger Mi Stores and 2600+ smaller Mi Stores and affiliated shops around the cities of India.

Consumers in the past years considering buying phones offline to test out the quality and its performance and they really actually liked to buy it offline. But as soon as the Online Shopping platform becomes known and more growing, smartphone brands decided to sell phones online. These may have lead to consumers buying some phones or products online because of the convenience it can offer.

Based on 2018 statistics, it is shown from a trusted survey that most Indian consumers are more likely to buy phones and products from online shopping platforms rather than buying them thru offline stores because at a touch of your fingertips you can buy those products instantly and with ease plus you'll be getting much much more discounts if you buy them online.

The President of the Mobile Retailers Association of India has said that the Offline industry is hurt so badly and more consumers are less likely to buy phones from them because of the huge discounts given by Online Shopping Platforms. Sometimes, consumers go to offline stores to check for new products but because of the expensive price, they are considering buying them online due to big discounts and holiday sales.

To resolve this issue, Xiaomi has gone making its sub-brands; Mi and or Redmi of making 85% or the majority of their smartphone stocks available for offline channels while some of the remaining will be limited for E-commerce platforms to cut its online demand. While their other sub-brand, Poco will be an Online exclusive entity where they sell smartphones at their online channels and they'll be no longer available at any offline stores hence they will be giving their consumers a way of buying the smartphone through their first and big online sale with a discounted price.

Redmi 9 Prime

Poco M2

Here we can see, Poco M2 exclusively for online, and Redmi 9 Prime to go on sale for most of its offline stores and at only limited stocks for online with slightly different pricing and channels. Regular consumers can never be aware of the fact that they are the same product plus the offline and online industry can work at peace.

Now we already knew the reason behind the same smartphones rebranded under two different names, you might be thinking why these smartphone brands couldn't create their own smartphone with a different design and specifications rather than rebranding it? Well, it is...

2. Because of the different cycles of development and manufacturing process of the smartphones.

Smartphones aren't created and manufactured in just a day or two and it is not an instant process. They undergo different development and manufacturing cycles but let it cut this short:

1.Research and Development
2.Design
3.Product Development
4.Product Marketing
5.Production and Manufacturing

That cycle may take up to 6-18 months, and that takes so long because it is not easy to initiate the unique design, worthy specifications, considerable marketing strategies, and manpower to create it in just a snap of a finger. We all know that things that created with durability or tested quality and performance that passed through different standards and certification are simple enough, to release and sell it with the assurance that it is worth buying because of the long process it underwent.

Recently, Poco announced departure from its parent company, Xiaomi and it's kinda weird for an independent sub-brand to rebrand a phone from a parent organization you departed away from. But because Poco can't wait that long (almost a year) to release another smartphone for their debut as an Independent sub-brand so, they have gone into rebranding an exisiting smartphone. Let say they rebranded Redmi K30 into Poco X2 to cater to their consumers. To put a little difference into it they atleast put liquid cooling and a much smoother MIUI for Poco to say that there are few changes atleast.

But as soon as they can develop and create their own smartphone for their next series or line-up, they will not be sharing the same looks with each other anymore. Hence, you will be seeing Poco M3 different from the Redmi 10 (Prime).

For example, Realme has gone rebranding Oppo A3S into Realme C1 and now we've seen their successors, the Realme C2 and Oppo A5S which is completely different from each other when it comes to the specs, camera, and the design.
