ZTE Axon 30 5G launched with a 2nd-gen Under-display Selfie Camera and Snapdragon 870

It was on September 1, 2020, when ZTE released the world’s first smartphone with under-display camera technology, the ZTE Axon 20 5G. After its debut, other brands followed and adopted the same technology like the Vsmart (Aris Pro) and Rakuten (Big). Also, big companies such as OPPO and Xiaomi have already presented their outputs too, but they haven't launched a specific product yet that uses it. Until today, ZTE released the second generation of under-display camera smartphone, the ZTE Axon 30 5G.

What did they do this time to achieve it?

As per Ice Universe, ZTE uses a screen of up to 400ppi in the area where the selfie camera sits. What is the concept? 400ppi can achieve the same pixel density of a general FHD resolution screen. So you can't even see the existence of the camera under the screen at a glance, even if you change angles or look at it for a while.

In order to achieve the 400ppi pioneered screen, ZTE has equipped the Axon 30 with a new independent UDC Pro screen display chip, which can do the following:
  1. Intelligent pixel enhancement control: Record the working time and temperature of each pixel, establish a calculation model, and adjust it in real-time to keep the brightness and chromaticity of the camera area under the screen consistent with the overall screen.
  2. Intelligent display optimization control: Enhance and optimize the display of each pixel, so that the display effect of the camera area under the screen is more delicate, the edge transition is more natural, and the overall display of the full screen is more pure, transparent, and consistent. In this way, no matter what content is displayed on the screen, it is difficult for everyone to find clues of where the selfie camera lies under the screen, which is seamless and natural.
The most problematic issue for the under-screen camera is how to balance the display PPI and the photo effect. The ZTE Axon 30 almost perfectly solves the problem by optimizing the camera's shooting quality in all aspects.
  1. In terms of screen light transmittance, the screen is divided into 7 layers: cover glass, polarizer, encapsulation glass, cathode, light-emitting organic material, array, substrate glass. Also, an OLED screen, a more transparent cathode, and a high-transmittance array are selected for the area of the under-display camera. The screen structure of the under-screen camera area uses a more transparent substrate glass, and the curved screen is yellowish and transparent in the same position compared with the poorly-performing PI substrate, therefore, the ZTE Axon 30 screen has better light transmittance, so that enough light is captured which is a prerequisite element to ensure the brightness and detail of the picture.
  2. In terms of sensors, the front camera adopts a four-in-one sensor. The photosensitive area of a single-pixel can be increased by four times, reaching the effect of a 2.24-micron super-large pixel, which effectively increases the amount of light input and guarantees the image quality.
  3. In terms of algorithms, the proactive and intelligent algorithm-Lingto 2.0 is based on AI deep learning, tens of thousands of sets of massive data model training, and various typical fields commonly used by users have been selected for thousands of real scenes. Shooting and continuous optimization. AI image quality enhancement technology can greatly improve the resolution of the picture and significantly improve the problems of underexposure and obvious noise in scenes with relatively dark ambient light, especially when the spotlight and surface light sources are fogged. In the shooting scene, the AI defogging, anti-glare, and AI adjustment of dynamic range improves contrast and picture details, suppress highlights, and enhances the clarity and transparency of the image quality.

On the front, it has a 6.92-inch AMOLED panel with a screen resolution of 2460×1080, an aspect ratio of 20.5:9, and a 120Hz refresh rate. In terms of screen quality, it has 100% DCI-P3 color space coverage, it also supports 10-bit color depth with 1.07 billion colors. In addition, it also supports DC dimming.

The phone has four designs/colors: Obsidian Black, Qingying, Light Coffee, and Champion Edition. ZTE uses 3D composite polymer materials that make it lightweight and the superposition of nano-level light texture makes the whole phone present a holographic effect.

Equipped with the highly acclaimed Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor. The Snapdragon 870 is based on TSMC’s 7nm process and uses " 1+3+4” eight-core three-cluster architecture, which contains (1) Cortex-A77 core clocked at 3.2GHz, (3) Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2.42GHz, and (4) Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. It is the best choice for the balance of consumption and performance, scoring a whopping 700,000 points at AnTuTu benchmark.
